3D Models and Tablet Tours at George Washington’s Ferry Farm

by Bernard K. Means, project director

George Washington’s Ferry Farm is developing a new, dynamic way that you can experience this historic landscape associated with George, his mother Mary, and the rest of the Washington family.  Coming soon, you will be able to use an iPAD to tour Ferry Farm. both physically and virtually.  The iPAD screen features a map with several locations on the Ferry Farm landscape.  This context-sensitive map allows you to learn more about each location, extending the visitor’s experience from the tangible landscape into the realms of cyberspace.  Three of the digital models that we have created through the Virtual Curation Laboratory are incorporated into the tablet tour, including the iconic Masonic pipe that may have belonged to George Washington.

Ferry Farm’s Jason Knight (left) demonstrates the iPAD tour. The tour consists of an interactive map (top right) and one option to select is the animated digital model of the Masonic pipe (bottom right). Images courtesy of Laura J. Galke.
